When Pierre Mizzi set up Logix in 1995, it all started with a mobile phone, one PC and one scanner operating from a one room office in San Gwann. The company’s vision was clear right from the start – that of providing professional marketing services without the frills and very expensive charges of the “old school” agencies. Pierre had been working as a marketing manager with a computer company for almost ten years and his “secret weapon” was to use technology to break barriers that were overdue to be broken.
“It was a question of being at the right place at the right time with the right tools”, he explains. “As part of my previous job, I was teaching TV and print designers on the use of computer graphics in their work, and I was confident that I was a much better communicator than most of them.” It was this realization and the belief that he could change things, that encouraged him to take the plunge and set up the company. This was the very dawn of the Internet age and he became one of the very first testers to start using the Internet through a dial-up connection. “I was meeting clients in the morning, doing paperwork in the afternoon and teaching myself web development during the night”, he explains. Soon after he went on to register the very first .com.mt domain and start producing websites for a growing list of clients. These included the very first website for the Malta Tourism Authority, numerous hotels and manufacturing companies amongst others.
The first year or two were the most difficult and it was only after the first full time staff were employed that the company started to expand beyond Pierre’s personal capabilities. Keith Pillow joined in 1998, and his excellent business development skills brought more growth as new possibilities became achievable. The synergy the two directors saw between them right from the start continued to grow as they worked closely together and in 2004 Keith became a shareholder and director in the company.
Around this same time, the directors purchased a house in San Gwann, demolished it and started to build a state-of-the-art office block purposely to house the company’s operations. This was the second time the company expanded its office space and the move two years later brought about major enhancements in the company’s staff and equipment setup.
Over the years the company’s directors continued their relentless pioneering spirit. Apart from pioneering the web in its very beginning, they developed various new forms of advertising, including cinema advertising, sms broadcasting, email marketing (before the word spam was coined), and more recently LED screen billboards. This was apart from creating a number of publications, TV programmes and special events in order to establish new advertising platforms for their clients. The company was also one of the very first to recognize the importance of social media in modern day integrated marketing.
So much has changed over time but the values established in the beginning have been retained. The ever present respect for clients, suppliers and staff and the vivid encouragement of creativity and determination are what defines Logix today and for the foreseeable future.
